Using Dreamweaver MX 2004 (DW) and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (PS), fifth graders designed and developed websites about something that they feel passionate about. While designing the content of their websites, emphasis was placed on what is safe and appropriate to share about themselves on the World Wide Web. They learned how to use PS to create web banners, as well as edit and enhance images from the internet for their web pages. Students were encouraged to create home pages with clear messages and strong designs. They learned that the table is one of the most important design tools because it provides a way of handling the relationship between text and imagery on web pages. Students created and maintained the site folder structure, which is necessary for the website to function properly. Each website contains both internal and external links.

3/2011

Fifth graders continue to work on their websites. Upon completing their websites, we will began a long term data analysis project titled "Toward A More Perfect Union."

2/2011

Because creating a website using Dreamweaver MX 2004 is such a complicated process, students will be working on this project for at least another 4 - 6 weeks. Upon completion, each student will have created a three page website.

1/2011

Many students have almost completed the home page of their website. In order to accomplish this they have learned how to import text from Microsoft Word into Dreamweaver, how to create and use a table to organize the text and images on their page, how to create internal and external links, how to modify the background of their homepage and how to insert images.

Fifth graders have completed their dreamscape and have now begun planning their website. They will use Dreamweaver MX 2004 (DW) and Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 (PS) to create their site. Their website will be about something that they feel passionate about and already know something about. While introducing this long term project, emphasis was placed on what is safe and appropriate to share about themselves on the World Wide Web and what it means to be a good digital citizen. Currently students are using a Microsoft Word document to write a proposal for their website. Once their idea is approved, they are using Word to write the text that they will copy and paste on to their home page.

FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR:

Inspired by surrealist art, fifth graders are using Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 to create a dreamscape. Students filled out this simple worksheet to begin designing their dreamscape.

Create a list here of the photos that you will need to search for:

Write a short description of your dreamscape here:

Students are currently using Photoshop to edit each photo individually. Emphasis is being placed on carefully cropping each image so that the final product looks like one image, not multiple images placed together. Fifth graders are continuing to develop their ability to use many of the basic Photoshop tools, including the magic and background eraser tools, the crop tool, the magnification tool and the move tool. While working at their computer, students are using a teacher created wiki with step-by-step directions on how to complete this project.

Here are several completed dreamscapes:

Fifth graders are just beginning to learn about their website design project. After learning about being a good digital citizen and what is appropriate to post about oneself online, students will begin to plan their website using this worksheet.
